Cisco boosts stadium WiFi, makes MLB slightly more tolerable for the internet-obsessed (video)

Anyone who's been in a packed stadium or concert venue knows better than to expect to be able to browse the web or even check email, unless of course your device happens to be compatible with a certain underutilized data-only network. A new initiative from Cisco, however, aims to bring connectivity to the over-saturated masses. The company's Connected Stadium WiFi bundles the Aironet 3500p access point, designed specifically for "high-density stadium and arena deployments," with strategically placed antennas that target fewer seats with the same amount of throughput -- likely similar to the 884-device network AT&T deployed at Cowboys Stadium for Super Bowl XLV. We hope the lighter load placed on carriers -- and already sky high ticket prices -- would help make Connected Stadium a free service, but key words like "purchasing" and "monetizeable" in the networking company's announcement make us think that some greenbacks are likely to change hands once the service launches in the real, connectivity-challenged world of overcrowded venues.

HTC Status Goes Up For Pre-Order On AT&T

The Facebook-centric HTC Status smartphone is now available for pre-order from AT&T, with an official launch date of July 17. We knew the Status (once the ChaCha) was officially headed to AT&T, and we had pegged the launch for July, but we didn?t know pricing or availability details until today. The HTC Status will cost you $50 with a new two-year agreement, an understandably low price given the phone?s old-school form factor and awkwardly small screen.

The mobile app marketplace is exploding; there are now hundreds of thousands of apps on the iOS, Android and BlackBerry app markets. Heck, even Windows Phone 7 just crossed the 10,000 mark!

But alas, not all apps are created equal; some are way, way better than others. Which leads me to today's Ask DLS question: What is your favorite mobile app at the moment?

We don't necessarily mean the latest craze; we'd like to hear about apps that have stood the test of time on your device, apps that are among the first you install on a new smartphones, apps that have earned their place on your home screen and in your heart.

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

iriver Story HD Becomes The First Google eBooks Ereader, To Be Sold Exclusively At Target

There's a new ereader in town, gals and pals. The iriver Story HD will soon be available at Target for $139.99. While by all accounts, it's a fine piece of hardware -- 7.3 ounces, first six-inch XGA e-ink screen, SD card slot, WiFi, six week battery life -- it's the Google Books integration that will likely spur sales. This might be the best anti-Kindle/Nook ereader on the market. Ereaders need access to a massive book marketplace to be successful. The Kindle has Amazon and the Nook B&N. The iriver Story HD is no different. However, instead of having a marketplace named after a famous bookseller, the new ereader uses Google eBookstore. This newish Google service uses the cloud for easy and convenient book storage, which allows multiple devices to share content much like the Kindle's Whispersync.

We know, we know: Mango. But outside of wishing for Microsoft's most significant update yet to Windows Phone 7, we're curious to know how else you'd change the HTC Arrive. Your pickings are slim for WP7 on The Now Network, and while the Arrive has an absolutely rock-solid design, we're sure you've picked up on a few quibbles over the past few months. Verizon pushes latest Thunderbolt update: solves reboot issues, kills free mobile hotspot

Don't act like Verizon didn't warn you: for Thunderbolt owners who see an available software update pop up on their phone this evening, they'll be placed squarely between a rock and a towering boulder. Why? On one hand, the Froyo OTA update promises to nix random reboots, improve data connectivity and fix the Bluetooth Discovery Mode pop-up windows. On the other, it adds a helping of bloatware (V CAST Music, V CAST Videos and My Verizon) while also killing the lust-worthy free mobile hotspot feature. Not like the carrier ever said it'd be any different come early July, but it's certainly a case of picking your poison here. If your T-bolt seems to be humming along just fine, we'd probably avoid the urge to update to the latest build. If it's rebooting as we speak, well... good luck pulling that trigger.
